About Construction & Evaluation

The ARE Construction & Evaluation (CE) division covers the architect's duties towards the end of a project. The exam covers contract administration, protocols for documenting construction activities, and the responsibilities of team members based on delivery method. You’ll learn about reviewing submittals, completing field reports, and certifying pay apps. Here’s how NCARB structures the CE exam:

  • Preconstruction Activities

    13-17 expected items, 17-23% target percentage

    • Interpreting the architect’s roles and responsibilities during preconstruction based on delivery method
    • Analyzing criteria for selecting contractors
    • Analyzing aspects of the contract or design to adjust project costs
  • Administrative Procedures & Protocols

    24-29 expected items, 32-38% target percentage

    • Determining appropriate additional information to supplement contract documents
    • Evaluating submittals including shop drawings, samples, mock-ups, product data, and test results
    • Evaluating the contractor’s application for payment
    • Evaluating responses to non-conformance with contract documents
  • Construction Observation

    24-29 expected items, 32-38% target percentage

    • Evaluating the architect’s role during construction activities
    • Evaluating construction conformance with contract documents, codes, regulations, and sustainability requirements
    • Determining construction progress
  • Project Closeout & Evaluation

    5-10 expected items, 7-13% target percentage

    • Applying procedural concepts to complete close-out activities
