About Project Development & Documentation

The Project Development & Documentation (PDD) exam builds on the concepts covered in the PPD exam. We’ll go in-depth in determining the sizes of structural and MEP systems, how to coordinate specifications with the drawings, and how to perform a code analysis. We’ll also cover how to document these findings in a clear and concise contract document set. Here’s how NCARB structures the PDD exam:

  • Integration of Building Materials & Systems

10-16 expected items, 10-16% target percentage

    • Analyzing the integration of architectural systems and technologies to meet project goals
    • Determining the size of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems and components to meet project goals
    • Determining the size of structural systems to meet project goals
    • Integrating specialty systems such as acoustics, lighting, fire suppression, conveying, security, and communications to meet project goals
    • Determining how to detail the integration of multiple building systems and technologies
    • Coordinating mechanical, electrical, plumbing, structural, and specialty systems and technologies
  • Project Manual & Specifications

12-18 expected items, 12-18% target percentage

    • Identifying and prioritizing components required to write, maintain, and refine project manual
    • Identifying and prioritizing components required to write, maintain, and refine project specifications
    • Coordinating specifications with construction documentation
  • Construction Costs & Estimates

2-8 expected items, 2-8% target percentage

    • Analyzing construction cost estimates to confirm alignment with project design
  • Construction Documentation

32-38 expected items, 32-38% target percentage

    • Determining appropriate documentation of building design
    • Determining appropriate documentation of site features
    • Determining appropriate documentation of detailed building drawings within individual architectural systems
    • Applying standards required to assemble a set of clear and coordinated construction documentation
    • Determining impact of project changes on documentation requirements and methods to communicate those changes to owner and design team
  • Codes & Regulations

8-14 expected items, 8-14% target percentage

    • Determining adherence to building regulatory requirements (IBC) at detail level
    • Determining adherence with specialty regulatory requirements at the detail level
